DESCRIPTION:Jodo Shinshu views New Year’s Day as a time to reflect and\, with renewed dedication\, to endeavor to live a life of gratitude and joy. \nNew Year’s Day service originated in Japan during the Nara period (710-794 CE). In BCA temples\, a service is held during the morning of New Year’s Day. In Japan\, some temples have a traditional seven-day observance. The original purpose of this service was to wish for world peace and to extend a blessing to the Emperor. For Jodo Shinshu followers\, it is a time for self-reflection and for expressing gratitude.

DESCRIPTION:The most important Jodo Shinshu observance is Shinran Shonin Memorial Day\, which marks the death of Shinran\, the father of Jodo Shinshu. It is one of two occasions commemorating Shinran\, the other being his birthday in May (Shinran Shonin Day). \nKakunyo Shonin\, great grandson of Shinran and the third Gomonshu\, initiated Shinran Shonin Memorial Day services. Memorial services are opportunities to listen to the dharma and to contemplate\, with gratitude\, the causes and conditions that enable us to listen to the dharma. On this particular occasion\, we reflect upon Shinran and his tireless efforts to make a life of gratitude accessible to everyone.

SUMMARY:Winter Pacific Seminar Dharmathon (LA Betsuin)
DESCRIPTION:The 2017 Winter Pacific Seminar – 21st Century: “East Meets West” Dharmathon with Higashi and Nishi Ministers continues the dialogue initiated last year by and about the two branches of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism.  \nThis second Pacific Seminar focusing on “East Meets West” will feature a “Dharmathon\,” a series of dharma messages given by over a dozen ministers from both traditions. Among the presenters will be Rev. Noriaki Ito\, Bishop of the Higashi Honganji North American District\, and Rev. Kodo Umezu\, Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America and Regional Superintendent of the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-ha North American District. Separate concurrent sessions will take place in English and Japanese. There will also be opportunities for discussion and Q&A. \nSFVHBT members can register through the temple Buddhist Education Committee for a discounted fee of $20. Deadline to register: Wed 1/18/17.
