SUMMARY:10 am Shunki Higan-e: Spring equinox service\, lunch
DESCRIPTION:Higan literally means “other shore”; it refers to nirvana or enlightenment or Pure Land. By contrast\, shigan means “this shore” of samsara\, the everyday world in which we live. The focus of Ohigan is practicing the Six Paramitas (giving\, discipline\, patience\, endeavor\, meditation\, wisdom) as a means to reach the “other shore.” In Jodo Shinshu\, the emphasis is on expressing gratitude for the working of the Primal Vow\, which Bodhisattva Dharmakara fulfilled through his practice of the Six Paramitas and other rigorous spiritual endeavors. \nOhigan is observed twice a year\, during spring equinox and fall equinox. Having originated in Japan in the early Heian period\, it has no direct connection to Shakyamuni Buddha nor any other teacher. \nRev. Dr. Duncan Williams\, Director of USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture\, will deliver the dharma message. Service will be followed by otoki luncheon and Dr. Williams’ Spring Ohigan seminar\, Religion\, Race\, and American Belonging: A Buddhist Perspective from 12:30-2:30pm.

DESCRIPTION:Religion\, Race\, and American Belonging: A Buddhist Perspective \nIs America a Christian nation? Or is America better thought of as a free nation – one based on the principles of religion freedom and equality under the law\, regardless of race or national origin? The seminar explores these questions from the perspectives of Buddhism and Asian American history – with a focus on the WWII Japanese American experience – to consider how Buddhists have contributed to religious freedom and the notion of America as a nation of becoming. \nDuncan Ryuken Williams is currently Director of the USC Shinso Ito Center for Japanese Religions and Culture. His forthcoming book is American Sutra: Buddhism and the World War II Japanese American Experience (Harvard University Press\, 2019).
